Something a little different today…. I was fascinated by this. And I’ll be impressed if you can guess what this is before reading further… Today an iceberg about the size of Delaware – among the largest in recorded history- splintered off of Antarctica. The change is large enough that the Antarctic coastline will need to be redrawn ? #antarctica #a68 #science #scientificillustration #watercolor #colorfulengineer

I figured out today that I could do a little painting while the kids were occupied with playdoh. Until, of course, Mia spotted the paints and wanted to “help” ? #watercolorpainting #multitasking #colorfulengineer

Have you seen the ‘fearless girl’ on Wall Street?
On Tuesday, ahead of International Women’s Day, a bronze statue of a “fearless girl” was installed in New York to stare down the Wall Street bull. Kristen Visbal is the artist, and you can read more about the project here. Unfortunately the statue is only temporary. But I think she is awesome. Which brings me to my latest painting…
Like so many who are taking pictures with her I wanted to capture her imagine. But to add a little something different I painted her with some color. I painted this with watercolor on paper.
Happy (belated) International Women’s Day!

Yesterday’s “A Day Without Immigrants” was a boycott/strike meant to highlight the contribution of immigrants to the U.S. It almost seems silly that we needed a day for this. But we live in weird times. And it seems there are people who need a reminder of our history and where we all came from. Not that our history on immigration is all great. A few weeks ago I ran across an article that contained a roundup of old anti-immigration cartoons. It’s really pretty amazing actually and I suggest looking through them if you have the time. We learn from our history, right? We hope.
This week I tried something new and worked with watercolors. I’ve had Lady Liberty’s torch sketched out for a few weeks now. I’ve been playing around with colored pencils lately but it didn’t seemed like they would do Lady Liberty justice. I considered my usual oil paint but kept thinking how watercolor might add a nice effect. So my sketch sat until I was able to make a quick trip to the store to buy watercolors. It’s been years since I’ve used them and what I had on hand was sparse. But I’m thrilled with how this turned out! (Ignore the uneven background- bad photo!)
This one is for immigrants, who help make our country great <3
Give me your tired, your poor;
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free;
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore;
Send these, the homeless, tempest-toss’d, to me;
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.

January Pencil Sketches
I’ve had a new obsession lately- drawing with colored pencils. It’s my version of the popular adult coloring books. The glorious thing about colored pencils and a sketch pad is that I can literally just lounge on the couch and draw while others around me are watching tv. Painting, on the other hand, requires me to retreat to my “studio” (aka “corner of a room”). This month while my “studio” was being transitioned into the basement (it sounds bad, but is actually quite nice) I started some drawings with colored pencils. And for whatever reason… perhaps the desire to not have to think late in the evening… I started a small fruit series.
The avocado drawing was perhaps the most thought out- drawn in response to those few days when avocados (sadly) got brought into politics.
Meatball also got some love this month. He was feeling like we all were…
I’ll probably be keeping this up for a while. Make sure to follow me on Instagram for regular updates.
Thank You Women
I apologize if you’re visiting my page hoping to see my regular whimsical drawings of bulldogs or bananas. I’ll be back with those soon 🙂
Today I wanted to say ‘thank you’ to all of the women who attended the Women’s March in D.C. or any other city. Or country! You are truly awesome and I regret I wasn’t there with you. The crowds were so inspirational to see. The message was an important one.
And the signs. All of the signs were AMAZING. I loved seeing them all. (See some here.) There were creative. They were bold. And they delivered the message. I’ve been glued to the #WMWArt hashtag.
I wanted to join in and make my own art. So here it is. LIFE: Women’s Edition.
Yes, I spent a significant part of today coloring.
The idea struck me after I made a “must be nice being a man” comment to someone. Once I started drawing this I felt like I could have drawn blocks for days. It doesn’t capture all women’s experiences. It would be impossible to do that. But it is something. And of course with the March today I wanted it to end with that.
There are still some empty blocks so if you have ideas for those I’d love to hear them.
Thank you again, ladies!
